At a time when nurses are increasingly attentive to the "5th vital sign" this workshop offered participants a wealth of practical information that empowered them to expand the caring dimension of their practice, using the theoretical framework of Jean Watson. The presentations integrated the most current national and international pharmacotherapeutic research for pain management and offered practical suggestions for practitioners at all levels. Program speakers, Rosemarie Hertting, RN, MSN, APN, C., Palliative Care Coordinator at Monmouth Medical Center and Ms. Maria Termini, RN, MSN, NPC, AOCN, Advance Practice, Samaritan Hospice, Marlton, established an environment where participants were exposed to a wide variety of learning modalities. The speakers frequently interacted with the audience and suggested strategies that were easily understood within the context of actual case studies. They stimulated critical thought and problems solving through group process that helped to not only understand the intricacies of drug management but created new professional relationships. A most poignant moment occurred when participants were given the opportunity to have an intimate video visit with a recipient of well-designed palliative care. This workshop created a blending of the science and art of nursing which left the participants well informed, invigorated and refreshed. The New Jersey League for Nursing Program Committee would like to thank Linda Cuoco, RN, MSA, CNAA, BC, Chief Nurse Executive, and The Valley Hospital for hosting this program. |
